The port of Haifa is the largest port in Israel and serves both passengers and cargo ships. In addition to the importance of the cargo port, Haifa industry also plays an important role in the Israeli economy. In and around the city there are several high-tech parks with production and research and development facilities for companies such as Intel, IBM, Microsoft and Google, as well as one of Israel's two oil refineries.9

Haifa is particularly famous for the sanctuary of the Báb and the surrounding hanging gardens on the Carmel, which were declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2008.
